Overview

Side yards are one of the most common places for water problems — they’re narrow, shaded, and often collect runoff along the fence line.
In this project we upgraded the area with a French drain + gravel base, then finished it with a poured concrete curb (mow strip) to stabilize the edge, keep landscaping clean, and improve long-term drainage.

The Challenge

  • Limited working space between the fence and the property line
  • Moisture and soft soil building up along the edge
  • Aging/rotted sections that needed to be removed before rebuilding
  • Need for a clean, durable finish that won’t shift season after season

Scope of Work

  • Measured layout and marked the drainage path
  • Selective demolition and cleanup of damaged/rotted sections
  • Excavation for drainage line and base prep
  • Installed drain line (French drain / weeping tile) with proper bedding
  • Added gravel base for drainage performance
  • Formed and poured a long concrete curb/mow strip for a crisp edge
  • Final grading, backfill, and site cleanup

Highlights

  • Water management at the source: drainage line + gravel helps move water where it needs to go
  • Concrete curb = cleaner edges: helps keep soil/mulch contained and makes maintenance easier
  • Long, straight finish: consistent line along the fence creates a “finished” look
  • Built for seasonal movement: proper base + drainage helps reduce shifting and washouts

Materials & Finishes

  • Drainage: corrugated drain line with gravel bedding (installed to suit site conditions)
  • Base: washed gravel for stability and water flow
  • Finish: poured concrete curb/mow strip to define the edge and reduce erosion

Result

A cleaner, more stable side-yard corridor that handles water better and stays easier to maintain — with a durable, straight concrete edge that holds its shape over time.

FAQ

What does a French drain actually do?

A French drain collects water in the soil and helps guide it along a controlled path, reducing pooling and saturated ground near the fence line.

Why add a concrete curb/mow strip?

It creates a crisp, stable edge that helps prevent erosion, keeps landscaping contained, and makes trimming/mowing easier.

How do you know where to route the drain?

We base the routing on the site slope, water collection points, and the most practical discharge path available for the property.

Does this help protect fences and landscaping?

Yes — reducing long-term moisture buildup near the fence line can help extend the life of wood components and keep the area cleaner.
